Which electric fires look most realistic?
The most convincing electric fire is the one that looks right from your sofa, in the light you actually live with. A dramatic close-up filmed in a dark room tells only part of the story. The logs, glass reflections and view from an angle deserve as much attention as the flame itself.
Look at the whole fire
Start with the fuel bed. Do the logs have believable proportions and texture? Is the glow concentrated where you would expect it, or spread uniformly across everything? Then watch the flame for a full minute. Decide whether you enjoy its movement once the initial impression has passed.
Ask to see the fire with the room lights on, with them dimmed and from the side. For a three-sided installation, the end views are part of the design. A fire that looks convincing straight on may appeal less from a favourite armchair.
Compare the technology with its ownership requirements
LED-based effects and water-vapour effects can look quite different. Avoid choosing on the technology name alone. Compare the exact appliances at a similar brightness and viewing distance.
Water-vapour systems introduce a maintenance routine as well as a visual effect. Dimplex identifies cleaning of internal components as part of maintaining its Optimyst fires. Follow the particular product manual for water type and cleaning frequency. Dimplex: cleaning an electric fire.
Before choosing a water-based model, ask how the reservoir is reached once installed, how refilling works and which parts need routine attention. An attractive built-in arrangement should still make everyday care straightforward.
Ask for a useful demonstration
A good comparison shows the complete fire, without music or heavy editing, at a normal seating distance. Ask for daylight footage and the flame setting you are likely to use. Phone cameras can alter colour and exposure, so a video helps shortlist rather than settling every detail.
Check the appearance with the fire switched off too. It will spend some of its time as a dark opening in the room. The surrounding trim and quality of the logs still matter then.
Buy the effect you want to live with
There is no universal winner for realism. Some buyers prefer a restrained amber flame; others enjoy brighter effects and adjustable colours. Choose the look you would keep using, with a maintenance routine you are happy to follow.
Next step: shortlist electric fires by flame technology, viewing sides and access requirements before comparing their demonstrations.
